What is Chinese medicine? Chinese medicine is an ancient form of treatment dating back at least 2000 years. It consists of a number of treatment methods including Acupuncture, Herbs, Gua Sha, Moxibustion, Cupping and nutrition. It has its roots in ancient China and has been influenced by Buddhism, Daoism (Taoism) and Confucianism. Chinese medicine believes that the body, mind and spirit are one. Disease or illness is caused by a disharmony amongst the body's internal organs. The disharmony is related to eight factors; Yin-Yang, Qi-Blood, Excess-Deficiency and Interior-Exterior. Chinese medicine works by balancing these eight factors within the body's internal organs in a holistic, natural way. What happens during my first consultation? During your first consultation you'll be asked a series of questions about your health, lifestyle, sleep, moods, menstruation, bowel and urine movements and of course the analysis of the tongue and pulse. Once this has been completed a diagnosis will be concluded and a treatment program will be explained to you. How long do I have to have treatment for? Treatment duration is very different between person to person depending upon the disharmony. Usually, Chinese medicine needs at least 2-3 weeks to see any effects, with the person being seen by the practitioner once a week. Chinese medicine is unlike western orthodox medicine, which is fast acting and has a set duration and course. Chinese medicine takes longer to re-balance the body as it is holistic and has to deal with other factors western, orthodox medicine excludes such as energy, emotions, mind, body and spirit. A chronic condition can take up to 6 months to a year to treat, whereas other not so chronic conditions can be treated in less time. Do I need to prepare myself for having acupuncture treatment? It is always best NOT to arrive at the clinic ready for your acupuncture treatment on a full or empty stomach. If you feel really tired, dizzy or faint, it is also advisable NOT to have any acupuncture treatment. It may to necessary to remove certain items of clothing so specific acupoints can be accessed. A good idea is to wear loose clothing that can be easily rolled up and moved. What happens during the acupuncture treatment? What happens during your acupuncture treatment depends on your condition and which acupoints have to be selected. This changes greatly from person to person as the treatment is unique as the human being it is treating. You'll be asked to lie down on the couch and relax as the acupuncture (and other forms of treatment if necessary) are given. |
